Services
- Services are provided to meet the unique needs of our animal patients; the treatment requirements of the clinical faculty – including interns, residents, and fellows; and, the educational needs of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Technology students of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

- Intravenous Admixtures – are prepared using aseptic technique in a horizontal laminar air flow hood.
- Parenteral Nutrition Solutions – are prepared by the pharmacy staff during the weekdays. Individualized training is provided to clinical faculty, residents, interns, and students on the proper compounding procedure and use of the horizontal laminar flow hood. Parenteral Nutrition orders should be submitted to the pharmacy not later than 2:00 PM for same day compounding.
- Antineoplastic Intravenous Admixtures – are prepared using aseptic technique in a vertical laminar air flow hood in the oncology pharmacy area
- Extemporaneous Compounding Services – are available to meet special requirements of individual patients. Please contact the pharmacist for further information about specific needs.
Staff
- The department is staffed by one registered pharmacist, two certified pharmacy technicians, and several university student assistants.
Hours of Operation
- The pharmacy is open from 8:00 AM till 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and closed on weekends and university holidays.
- Automated Dispensing Machines located in CCU, Oncology, Anesthesia (LA & SA), and Pegasus Center contain controlled substances and emergency medication stock. Their use is limited to medication to be administered to patients in the hospital; a clinician order is required for all medication, or supplies, removed from the machine. Access is restricted to licensed veterinary technicians and veterinarians holding a valid controlled substance license.
- After hours access to the emergency stock is controlled by the security card access system. Access is restricted to clinical faculty, house officers, and junior and senior veterinary medicine students (under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian) while on their clinical rotations.
Regulatory
- The pharmacy in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Michigan State University is licensed by the State of Michigan, Board of Pharmacy, as an institutional pharmacy. We are not a retail pharmacy, nor open to the general public.
- Our services are restricted to hospital inpatients, and the outpatients of the various large and small animal clinics.
