The Merck-Merial Scholars Summer Research Program has been continuously funded through the Merck Foundation for over a decade. This program provides mentored summer research experiences, augmented by seminars and field trips, for first- and second-year veterinary students both on campus as well as through 2 other collaborating institutions. Thus, students can participate in research training at the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine at the University of Michigan and at the Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as well as at MSU. Preference is given to students seeking an off-campus research experience. Students from other colleges of veterinary medicine, within and outside of the United States, are also welcome to participate in this program. US citizenship or permanent residency is not required. Students selected for the program also have the privilege to participate in the Merck-Merial NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium which will be held at North Caroline State University, August 2009.
The program begins on May 18, 2008 and ends on August 8, 2009. There is some flexibility afforded to non-MSU students with regard to the dates of the program.
Students interested in the research on the campus of Michigan State University can find information on potential mentors and their research through the link below as well as through contacting the program director, Dr. Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan.

There is an increasing demand and need for veterinarians trained in laboratory animal medicine. The University of Michigan has had a long-standing training and research program in laboratory animal medicine and comparative medicine. This program has an excellent reputation and is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the United States. Veterinary students participating in this 12-week summer research program will have the opportunity to participate in a mentored research project in the area of clinical laboratory animal medicine or basic research in comparative medicine. This summer research-training program is an excellent opportunity for students considering a career in laboratory animal medicine.

Van Andel Institute
The Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) is a private research institute with the goal of creating a world-class research institute dedicated to improving human health. Their initial focus has been on cancer research, and have built programs in basic science related to improving our understanding of cancer, including research programs rich in functional genomics. They have recently expanded their focus to include Parkinson's disease. The VARI has partnered with Michigan State University, Wayne State University, and the University of Michigan in forming the Core Technology Alliance within the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor. As part of the Core Technology Alliance, the VARI houses the Animal Model Consortium.
The VARI recognizes the importance of comparative medicine and pathology in advancing our knowledge of disease processes and the important contributions that veterinarians make to basic biomedical research. The VARI will provide mentored research training to veterinary students in a variety of their basic science laboratories.
