The Office of Academic Programs and Student Services (APSS) provides and coordinates a variety of academic and non-academic services. Staff in APSS can assist with issues of career guidance, personal counseling, learning strategies, financial aid, and mentoring programs.  We can also help coordinate leadership and financial aid workshops, provide short-term emergency loans, coordinate scholarship applications, review, and awards.  The APSS office is also responsible for posting jobs, internships/fellowships, research opportunities; assisting student leaders in planning events for their organizations; and dispersing information about college-wide activities.

The staff in Student Services can provide short-term counseling.  Our psychologist is qualified to provide short-term counseling and mental health referrals.  The Student Services psychologist organizes support and interest groups as needed and requested by veterinary medical students.

To keep students informed of events in the College of Veterinary Medicine, the college’s Public Information Officer publishes a weekly newsletter, “Inside CVM,” which provides students, faculty and staff with information on the upcoming week’s activities.  The same office also publishes an electronic calendar of activities, which is distributed via email to the CVM community.  If you would like to post an activity on the electronic calendar, call 355-5165.  This service comes out of Fee Hall and should not be confused with the Office of Student Services!

Academic Support

Academic Support exists to assist veterinary medical students on a long or short-term basis during the first two years of veterinary medical education.  The College of Veterinary Medicine is committed to retaining those students it admits, therefore academic support programs are available to any student.  The Student Services staff members in collaboration with the Learning Resources Center will assist veterinary medical students in assessing their learning skills and obtaining appropriate instruction in various study and test taking techniques.  For some courses, tutoring may be available through APSS.

CVM students are responsible for informing the Academic Programs and Student Services staff if they are experiencing any difficulties in the curriculum.  Informing staff members about your challenges will improve APSS’s ability to help you find the services needed in a timely fashion.  If experiencing difficulty in a course or courses, it is best to assess it with an APSS staff member early.  It is possible that if you wait until the semester is almost ending, it might be a daunting challenge to recover the semester.  APSS strongly advocates its professional students to be proactive and anticipate the need for help. APSS has no other way of knowing your difficulties unless you inform a member of the APSS team!
