Preveterinary Students That Reach Junior Standing

Preveterinary Students That Reach Junior Standing (56 CREDITS)

A preveterinary student reaches junior standing once they have successfully completed a total of 56 credit hours.  This includes transfer credits as well as course credits taken at MSU.  As they reach junior standing they must select a degree granting major at MSU.  While a bachelor’s degree is not required for admission in to the DVM Program, it is strongly encouraged that students complete a bachelor’s degree.  Bachelor degree programs not only provide additional rigor to a student’s schedule, they also prepare students for alternative career in the event that they are not admitted to Veterinary School.

Some of the most commonly selected majors are:

While the above stated majors may be the ones that are most commonly selected by our preveterinary students, there are numerous other majors that a student may select from.  MSU’s Academic Programs Catalog provides the most current and comprehensive list of majors available to all MSU students.

There is no preference for a particular major in the selection of candidates for admission to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program.  A student may select any major of their choice that meets their educational interests.

It is important for students to remain in contact with their preveterinary advisors after they have selected a degree-granting major.  The preveterinary advisors will provide continued guidance in preparing for a competitive application to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program.

The Undergraduate Advising Center

The Undergraduate Advising Center is a unit of the Office of the Dean in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Advisors can provide you with accurate information and personal assistance in academic planning. They can also refer you to other helpful campus resources.

CVM's Undergraduate advisors are in close contact with the CVM Admissions Office.  They are able to provide students with the latest information on requirements, selection criteria, and successful candidate profiles. The Undergraduate Advising Center staff members can assist you as you develop your potential as an MSU student and future applicant to the professional program.

As a preveterinary student, you will meet with an advisor in the center each semester to determine upcoming course enrollment.  You are also welcome to make appointments with an advisor at any time to discuss concerns such as future admission to the professional program, choice of major, and career alternatives.

If you wish to schedule an academic advising appointment follow the instructions below:
