Science Requirements
Per the MSU CVM policy on prerequisite coursework, 50% of the prerequisite science courses must be completed by the October 2nd application deadline. A summary of these courses and credit levels is as follows:
Inorganic Chemistry – Three (3) semester credits of lecture and laboratory work
Organic Chemistry – Six (6) semester credits of lecture and laboratory work
Biochemistry - Three (3) semester credits in an upper-division lecture course
General Physics – Eight (8) semester credits of lecture and laboratory
General Biology – Six (6) semester credits of lecture and laboratory
Math – Three (3) semester credits
Nutrition – Three (3) semester credits
Microbiology – Four (4) semester credits of lecture and laboratory
Eukaryotic Cell Biology – Three (3) semester credits of lecture
Genetics – Three (3) semester credits of lecture
These required courses total a minimum of 42 credits. There are a number of ways in which to complete half of them by the application deadline. If half of these credits are not completed with a minimum of 2.0 by October 2, the application can be withdrawn. MSU students note that the above requirements are met in 54 credits at MSU, so you must have 27 credits completed prior to application.
All prerequisites should be completed with a minimum grade of 2.0 prior to August 1 of the year of matriculation.
The biological science prerequisite coursework
(including Introductory Biology I and II, Eukaryotic Cell Biology,
Genetics, and Microbiology) must have been completed within the
past 8 years of application. If not, a letter must be written to
to request review of biological science
prerequisite coursework by the director of admissions, in
consultation with the associate dean. A recommendation to update
the biological science prerequisite courses will be
made based on original grades received and recent work or school
experience. For any science prerequisite courses repeated, only
the most recent grade will be used in the science gpa calculation for
all regular applicants.
College credit and numerical or letter grades must be earned for all
science pre-requisite courses. In addition to the stated credit
minimums, equivalency of course content and level is critical in
determining if courses fulfill requirements. Course equivalencies
for most Michigan colleges are listed in this website. Course
equivalencies for non-Michigan colleges can be requested via e-mail to
