Mentoring Program
The College of Veterinary Medicine has organized a mentoring program for veterinary medical students. This program was implemented at the request of veterinary students and graduates, because they felt very strongly that students could benefit from contacts outside the classroom with CVM faculty and alumni. CVM mentors are responsible for meeting with their mentees twice during each semester. Additional time spent with mentee(s) is certainly encouraged. The Academic Programs and Student Services Office (APSS) offer Mentors’ and Mentees’ training each year. Informational materials on mentoring are available upon request. This yearly training is designed to provide information on mentoring and to answer any questions the mentors and mentees might want to know about the program. CVM mentors act as a guide and a personal contact that is acquainted with the culture of the university and the veterinary profession and also serves as a sounding board for the mentee.
To arrange compatible matches, all of the participants - mentors and mentees - fill out a background information sheet detailing professional and academic interests as well as hobbies and some personal information, such as the geographical area they are from and school attended. The Coordinator completes the matching for Student Services.
Every effort is made to complete matches prior to the orientation program to allow at least two possible times when mentors and mentees might meet before the fall training. Mentors are invited to Orientation and the fall welcome picnic. Mentoring requires a commitment of time and effort from both participants. Students are required to actively participate in the program by meeting with mentors whether is via email or telephone. If you did not request a mentor, you can do so at anytime during your career at MSU CVM. For further information about the program, please contact the Office of Academic Programs and Student Services.
The goal of Student Services is to assist four-year professional program students to develop professional attributes: leadership, respect for others and themselves, cultural awareness, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.
