• Effective September 1, 2024, the MSU VDL does not accept samples directly from pet or horse owners. For test requests involving companion animals, exotics, pocket pets, and horses, samples must be submitted by a veterinarian with the following exceptions: genetic testing, cremation services, and referral for rabies testing. For livestock and other production animals, submission through a veterinarian is strongly encouraged, but not required. The MSU VDL’s expert diagnosticians provide results to, and consult with, clinical veterinarians regarding submissions. Referring veterinarians are best positioned to interpret diagnostic results based on history, clinical examination, and veterinarian-client-patient relationship and use those results to provide guidance on herd health management, treatment of disease, medical therapies, and clinical care.
  • Fees are subject to change without notice. Please refer to our catalog of available tests for a complete list of services and current prices.
  • All current charges are due within 28 days of the print date on the statement unless otherwise noted. Accounts not paid within the stated time period are subject to penalty. These penalties include: denial or cancellation of future services; placement with a collection firm which includes an additional processing fee. Please be assured that we will make every effort to work with clients to resolve billing payment issues. Please contact our Business Office at 517.353.3045.
  • Additional charges may be necessary for analysis of non-standard samples. Under these conditions, analyses will be initiated only after consultation with the client and with the client’s consent.
  • A handling fee will be assessed for shipping specimens to referral laboratories (in addition to the test cost) or for returning specimens to clients.
  • All samples and specimens submitted become the property of the MSU VDL and will not be returned unless specific arrangements are made and approved in advance by MSU VDL management. Samples, specimens, and related test and diagnostic results may be used for teaching and research purposes. Test and diagnostic results will be shared with appropriate state or federal agencies as required by law.
  • In the interest of privacy and continuity of care, results will be shared only with the client of record (the clinic or person paying the bill).
  • The MSU VDL reserves the right to subcontract any work required to complete testing of any and all submissions. Any subcontracted work will be indicated as such on the laboratory report.
  • Special projects/consultations can be arranged with faculty members for a prearranged fee. Contact the lab at 517.353.1683.
  • To encourage collection and submission of an adequate number of samples for diagnosis, selected tests are available at reduced rates when samples are submitted as a group from one herd or flock. Price breaks occur between 10 and 11 animals, 25 and 26 animals, and more than 100 animals. Visit our test catalog for additional information or contact the lab directly.
  • The sender is responsible for postage and/or special delivery charges on packages sent to the MSU VDL. Adherence to mailing regulations is the sender’s responsibility.
