Currently, the MSU VDL is not providing testing for suspected monkeypox infections in animals. However, we continue to monitor the spread of the disease in the United States. We are in regular communication with our state and federal partners, as we are with all potential threats to animal health.

For more information about monkeypox and pets, please see the resources available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Information For Veterinarians

The CDC has detailed information about monkeypox in animals, case definitions for animals, examining animals with suspected monkeypox, and specific guidance for public health veterinarians and animal health officials.

An article from the AVMA provides answers to frequently asked questions, and an overview of signs, species affected, transmission, and prevention.

Information For Pet Owners

The CDC also has detailed information for pet owners about caring for pets including what to do if a pet shows signs of monkeypox and steps to take if a pet may be infected.
