Hypercalcemia in Dogs and Cats: Diagnostic Tools (9:00-9:50 a.m.)

Don’t be intimidated by challenging calcium cases! This session will review calcium homeostasis and use of assays for parathyroid hormone, parathyroid hormone-related protein and metabolites of vitamin D to identify potential causes of hypercalcemia. Attendees will learn approaches for interpretation of results. Case examples of primary hyperparathyroidism, humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy, vitamin D excess, and granulomatous disease will help attendees apply what they’ve learned with their patients.

Hypocalcemia and Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Dogs and Cats: Diagnostic Tools (10:00 - 10:50 a.m.)

Our exploration of calcium continues with a review of assays for parathyroid hormone, ionized calcium, and metabolites of vitamin D to identify potential causes of hypocalcemia. Attendees will learn approaches for interpretation of results. Case examples involving primary hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, renal disease, and gastrointestinal diseases will help attendees apply what they’ve learned with their patients.
