December 17, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reports that a five-year-old mare from Wexford County has been confirmed to have strangles. The mare developed a fever and neurologic signs starting on November 6, 2019. An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of the brain discovered multiple brain abscesses. The mare was euthanized on December 5, 2019, and necropsied. The brain abscesses were determined to be caused by the bacteria responsible for strangles. The mare was up-to-date on its strangles vaccination. This brings the total number of strangles cases for 2019 to 17. For past case information, please see the Equine Disease Communication Center.
November 12, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed an additional case of strangles which has been reported to the Equine Disease Communication Center. This brings the total number of strangles cases for 2019 to 16, all of which were reported to EDCC.

June 14, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed an additional case of strangles which has been reported to the Equine Disease Communication Center. This brings the total number of strangles cases for 2019 to 14, all of which were reported to EDCC.
May 7, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed an additional case of strangles which has been reported to the Equine Disease Communication Center. This brings the total number of strangles cases for 2019 to 13, all of which were reported to EDCC.
April 18, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed an additional case of strangles which has been reported to the Equine Disease Communication Center. This brings the total number of strangles cases for 2019 to 12, all of which were reported to EDCC.
April 12, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed an additional case of strangles which was reported to the Equine Disease Communication Center. This brings the total number of strangles cases for 2019 to 11, all of which were reported to EDCC.
April 5, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported four additional confirmed cases of strangles to the Equine Disease Communication Center. This brings the total number of strangles cases for 2019 to ten, all of which were reported to EDCC.
April 2, 2019 - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported five additional cases of strangles to the Equine Disease Communication Center.
