Pacemaker donations
We receive many generous offers for pacemaker donations at the MSU Veterinary Medical Center. The Hospital’s Cardiology Service sources donated pacemakers from a medical instruments company, which processes pacemakers that are suitable for our patients. If you are interested in facilitating a pacemaker donation, please ask your funeral home if they submit pacemakers to veterinary practices. The Hospital generally cannot accept donations that are called in, though we appreciate the consideration.
The Cardiology Service at the MSU Veterinary Medical Center focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular disorders in companion animals. The service provides medical cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, as well as minimally invasive transvenous procedures and those done via thoracoscopic exams. We also provide consulting services for large animals.
Patients typically visit the Cardiology Service for:
- Abnormal heart rhythms
- Collapse (syncope)
- Coughing
- Cyanosis (bluish color of the gums)
- Evidence of heart enlargement
- Exercise intolerance
- Murmurs or other abnormal heart sounds
- Shortness of breath
A primary care veterinarian may also refer patients for:
- Murmurs or other abnormal heart sounds
- Evidence for heart enlargement
- Abnormal heart rhythms
The Cardiology Service offers full-service treatment options including:
- Dietary and exercise modifications
- Medical therapy
- Non-surgical or minimally invasive procedures
- Surgical procedures on the heart
