Castration is the removal of a male horse’s testicles. This is a surgical procedure performed by a veterinarian. Castration is typically done to colts after they have skeletally matured to ease training and manageability. Castration also may be done to prevent an unwanted horse, which is a common welfare issue.
Horses that are to be castrated should be in good health and current on deworming and immunizations, especially tetanus vaccination. Castration can be done either down or standing. The method will be determined by your veterinarian based on the size, temperament of the horse, and the facilities.
