In addition to good horse-keeping practices, owners should:
- Keep feed sealed and uncontaminated
- Keep water tanks clean and filled with fresh water
- Use heat-treated cereal grains and extruded feeds
- Use feeders
- Clean up dropped feed to discourage scavengers
- Monitor your property for dead animals and remove all carcasses immediately
- Do not have free-choice cat or dog food in the barn area, as this will encourage opossums and other wild animals to inhabit the area.
