In addition to good horse-keeping practices, owners should:

  • Keep feed sealed and uncontaminated
  • Keep water tanks clean and filled with fresh water
  • Use heat-treated cereal grains and extruded feeds
  • Use feeders
  • Clean up dropped feed to discourage scavengers
  • Monitor your property for dead animals and remove all carcasses immediately
  • Do not have free-choice cat or dog food in the barn area, as this will encourage opossums and other wild animals to inhabit the area.
