The cause of colic can vary and range from mild, easily treatable problems, such as spasmodic colic, to severe diseases that require surgery and removal of a piece of the intestine. Your veterinarian will examine your horse thoroughly and use this information to determine if your horse needs to be referred to the Hospital or can be treated at home. When treating at home, it is important to keep in touch with your veterinarian; if signs worsen or change, hospitalization or surgery may be necessary. When surgery is needed, immediate action will increase the horse’s chance of survival.
