Dr. Lock is a professor and the associate chair for South Campus Animal Farms in the Department of Animal Science with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Originally from a dairy farm in the southwest of the United Kingdom, he received his PhD from the University of Nottingham and completed postdoctoral training there and at Cornell University.

Since joining MSU in 2009, Dr. Lock has led a robust research and extension program focused on dairy cattle nutrition, with an emphasis on fatty acid digestion and metabolism, and understanding the intricate relationships between diet, rumen metabolism, nutrient partitioning, and milk synthesis. Collaborative efforts with nutritionists and producers have accelerated his program, which has challenged conventional thinking and has led to new opportunities for the feeding of dairy cows. He is a strong advocate for translational science and industry engagement and brings a collaborative spirit to his work. In 2025, he joined the College of Veterinary Medicine as the Interim Chair of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.
