International students must submit transcripts from all international institutions through World Education Services (WES) for translation. International applicants who are non-native speakers of English and who do not hold a Bachelor’s Degree from a US Institution must take a test of English as a second language.

A Test of English as a second language must be taken by the VMCAS Deadline and results submitted by mail as soon as available to the following address:

Note: Citizens of Puerto Rico are US Citizens and therefore do not need to send English language test results.

The following test options are available:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT): Applicants choosing to take the TOEFL iBT MUST take each subsection of the TOEFL iBT. The minimum required scores on the TOEFL iBT are 25 in listening, 22 in writing, 22 in speaking, and 23 in reading; no minimum overall score is required. All applicants MUST pass all sections of the TOEFL iBT in a single examination administration. The test must have been taken within the past two years.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Applicants choosing to take the IELTS MUST take the academic IELTS. The minimum required score on the academic IELTS is 6.5 (overall band score), with at least a 6.5 in the listening band, a 6.0 in the writing band, and a 7.0 in the speaking band; no minimum reading score is required. All candidates MUST pass all sections of the academic IELTS in a single examination administration. The test must have been taken within the past two years.

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: Applicants choosing to take the CAEL Assessment MUST take each subsection of the CAEL Assessment. The minimum required score on the CAEL Assessment is 60 (overall score), with at least a 60 in the listening band, a 50 in the writing band, and a 60 in the speaking band. All candidates MUST achieve at least the minimum required scores for all required sections of the CAEL Assessment on the same exam administration.

Tuition for International Students

The MSU Office of Financial Aid projects average tuition and living costs for different categories of students. International students must provide evidence of the non-resident total before an I-20 is granted. This evidence must be supplied upon request from the MSU Registrar’s Office after being admitted to the program.
