MSU Email and NetID

Each Michigan State University (MSU) student is issued an MSU NetID, which is used to access university platforms and systems. Each student will be given an MSU email address; this address will serve as the official means of communication between the student and the college. It is the student’s responsibility to review and respond to emails regularly.

Forwarding MSU emails to another email account or failing to check email are not valid excuses for missing a deadline or other requirements of the CVM Graduate Professional (DVM) program.

Further, students must use secure email when working in the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) setting if a discussion of patient information is involved. MSU email is secure; many web-based email systems, including Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo, are not.

University Email Policy

Michigan State University (MSU) uses email as one of several means of communication with students. In the context of this notice, “student” refers to all persons who have been admitted to MSU as a student, whether or not they have registered or enrolled for classes. An official MSU email address is issued to each student at the time they are admitted to MSU. This official MSU email address takes the form of a person’s MSU NetID followed by “@msu.edu” (e.g., sparty@msu.edu) and resides in an MSU email system. This is the only email address that the university will centrally maintain for sending official communications to students, and the only email address that the university will use for sending official communications to students after they enroll.

Students are responsible for activating their MSU NetID and email account; both may be accomplished on the NetID website. Students must check email regularly to read important messages and notifications. Certain communications may be time sensitive. Failure to read official university communications sent to students’ official MSU email addresses does not absolve students from knowing and complying with the content of those communications.

Each student must manage their university email account following the university guidelines for appropriate use of MSU email services by internal users on MSUNET.

Use of email for official communications with students will comply with other applicable MSU policies and business practices.

CVM Email Policy

In March of 2018, the Dean and the CAC approved the guidelines listed below. Please adhere to them as well as the policy.

  • Email must not be used for personal profit or non-profit purposes such as advertising, rentals, selling or buying things, soliciting for charity or other such uses. CVM Student Club sales are allowed but must be sent to the CVM Dean’s Office for approval.
  • Email must not be used for indiscriminate mass mailings (e.g., pet adoptions and lost and found). Only email announcements approved by the Dean’s Office as pertinent to CVM operations/events will be distributed to all users, which may include fundraiser announcements (e.g., IronDog). Announcements, in final format, can be submitted for consideration to the CVM Dean’s Office (submit potential announcements to Anna Thorpe at boyonosk@msu.edu or Greg Rambat at rambatgr@msu.edu).
  • Email must not be used to harass, offend, or intimidate other users.
  • Email users must respect the privacy of other email users and should not use others' passwords or read their mail.
  • Email users must not send mail under the identity of another user.
  • Email users must not intentionally modify network configuration files or otherwise interfere with the functioning of the email system.
  • Violation of the above email usage policies may result in loss or restriction of email account privileges. Professional DVM students, graduate students and undergraduate students violating these policies are subject to the policies and processes outlined in the respective guidance documents regarding student rights and responsibilities (CVM Honor Creed and Medical Student Rights and Responsibilities; Graduate Student Rights and Responsibilities and the Student Rights and Responsibilities, respectively). Faculty and staff violations of this policy will be managed by the applicable department chairperson or service unit director.

CVM Email Announcements are used for recruitment purposes only. All other announcements are distributed via InsideCVM's Announcements section.

Student Information System

The Student Information System (SIS) is the official record system at MSU. Students can view enrollment, tuition charges and account summary; update their addresses; view holds; and review their academic progress. To access the Student Information System, students must log in with their MSU email and password through MSU Okta Single Sign-On.

Web Accessibility

Web accessibility is the practice of removing barriers that inhibit persons with disabilities from accessing information found on the Internet. In 2008, MSU released its Digital Accessibility Policy. In brief, the policy requires all university web pages used to conduct core business to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, a set of guidelines adopted by federal agencies and courts as the standard for accessibility.

Desire2Learn (D2L)

Desire2Learn (D2L) is an MSU-supported online learning management system. All required courses in the curriculum utilize D2L for posting electronic course packs and educational materials. Access to course content is available only to enrolled students. Upon graduation from the DVM program, students will not retain any access to D2L course pages. To access D2L, students must log in with their MSU email and password through MSU Okta Single Sign-On.

MediaSpace

The ability to view previously recorded lectures on-demand, is made available on a course-by-course basis, determined by the course moderator. The ability to view lectures on MediaSpace is not guaranteed. The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) works to provide a consistent viewing experience in the MediaSpace service. However, due to bandwidth and server capacity limitations, lecture playback may exhibit inconsistent behavior. To access CVM specific educational videos in MediaSpace, students must log in with their MSU email and password through MSU Okta Single Sign-On.

Academic Calendar and Medtrics

The academic calendar is posted to the CVM website under the students tab. The calendar is a composition of course schedules, allowing students the ability to conveniently see dates and times of learning events.

Specific course schedules will be made available in Medtrics, which students must log into with their MSU email and password through MSU Okta Single Sign-On.

iClicker Policy

All students are provided with free iClicker accounts. The subscription allows students to associate an electronic device (e.g., a smartphone) with their account. Students are expected to bring the device associated with their iClicker subscription to class regularly to be prepared if the technology is used by faculty. Learning events will continue as scheduled, regardless of whether a student has their device. Additional information about iClicker for student use can be found on the Technology at MSU website. To access CVM courses in iClicker, students must log in with their MSU email and password through MSU Okta Single Sign-On.

This technology may provide practice with concepts and principles, stimulate discussion, take attendance and/or administer assessments. Questions may be posed at any time during the class session. No makeup experiences will be provided should a student forget their device. If iClicker is used to take attendance, students will be expected to arrive in class on time and stay for the assigned activity.

As a matter of professionalism, please note that under no circumstances should a student allow another student to access their iClicker account. Answering questions or checking in for attendance on behalf of another student using their device is considered academic dishonesty and may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the DVM program.
