The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. These accommodations may apply to classroom, examination, and clerkship settings.

Accommodations are established through the MSU Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD). To request an accommodation, students must contact RCPD to identify and register a disability.

It is essential to understand that the CVM does not provide accommodations until the written accommodation letter or addendum has been received. For this reason, the student must be proactive and contact RCPD as soon as possible.

Preclinical Student Accommodations

For preclinical students, accommodations will be provided by RCPD in the form of a written document called an Accommodation Letter. The Accommodation Letter is the primary method of documentation that enables students to communicate their accommodations to faculty. A similar form of documentation is called a Temporary Adjustment Letter and performs the same functions for students with temporary conditions. The Accommodation Letter is individualized and cannot be generated until a student becomes registered with RCPD.

Students are responsible for sharing their Accommodation Letter or Temporary Adjustment Letter with the Office of Student Engagement and Success (SES) Student Academic Success (SAS) team to implement their accommodations. The SAS team will share a summary of students’ accommodations with course moderators to help facilitate their implementation; however, students are also encouraged to share their accommodation letter directly with course moderators and discuss their accommodations as applicable. The Accommodation Letter or Temporary Adjustment letter should be sent to SES as soon as possible once received by the student. When feasible, students should initiate the process in the summer before their matriculation or, if later, as soon as the disability is documented.

Clinical Student Accommodations

For clinical students, accommodations will be provided by RCPD in the form of a written document called an Addendum. The Addendum is the primary method of documentation that enables students to communicate their accommodations to clerkship moderators and preceptors.

For clinical students that had an active Accommodation Letter during the preclinical curriculum, some accommodations may transfer to the clinical phase while others may need further discussion with the administrative team and the RCPD specialist. Students should plan to connect with their assigned RCPD specialist at least 12 weeks prior to their matriculation to the clinical phase of the curriculum to discuss their transition to the clinics.

Upon receipt of their Addendum from RCPD, students must share the Addendum with the Office of Student Engagement and Success (SES) Student Academic Success (SAS) team and clerkship moderators/preceptors to implement their accommodations. Students are expected to share their Addendum with the clerkship moderator/preceptor a minimum of two (2) weeks prior to the start of each rotation. Students must work directly with clerkship moderators/preceptors to facilitate their accommodations.

Students and faculty are encouraged to contact the SAS team with any questions regarding the Addendum.

NAVLE Accommodations

Students seeking accommodations for the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) must apply directly through the International Council for Veterinary Assessment (IVCA). Please refer to their website for additional information.

Students may contact their assigned RCPD specialist for assistance preparing their ICVA accommodations application for the NAVLE.
