Facilities
Professional students have key card access to the CVM Student Center, a space to relax, visit, study, or take a break from studying without having to leave the veterinary complex. Refrigerators, microwaves, and a water machine are available for student use.
The space does not allow for club or class meetings. Group meetings with more than eight people should be held in other college meeting rooms (e.g. A174, A213, G150, G201). Room reservations for the small meeting rooms will be posted on the whiteboards on each room's door. Use of the game room, lounge area, television, and kitchenette will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Students may not leave food or drink containers in the café, study rooms, game rooms, or lounge area. Students are responsible for cleaning up after themselves. Questions or concerns about using the Student Center should be directed to class presidents or cvm.studentsupport@cvm.msu.edu.
DVM students are welcome to reserve rooms in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) for meetings or group study sessions by emailing the Office of Student Engagement and Success (SES) at cvm.studentsupport@cvm.msu.edu.
Each student will receive an assigned individual locker. The locker is to be used for storage of school and personal items.
- Gray lockers on the second floor of G-building will be assigned for CVM Graduate Professional (DVM) students in the first and second years of the DVM program.
- Students in the third and fourth years of the DVM program will be assigned a locker in the A-building near the Veterinary Medical Center.
- Students are responsible for purchasing and maintaining their locks. For those who purchase a combination lock, please be sure that this information is “stored” somewhere other than your mind.
- Students are expected to always maintain a clean locker (outside and inside).
- Students must remove their lock and all belongings at the end of the second and fourth semesters and at graduation. Failure to do so will result in the lock being removed and the remaining belongings being discarded.
Student mailboxes are located in the College of Veterinary (CVM) Student Center and, when possible, are identified by class year and are labeled alphabetically. Everyone's cooperation is required to maintain the mailboxes neatly and professionally. Please follow the guidelines listed below.
- Flyers should be posted on the bulletin boards; please do not tape them to the mailboxes or on the walls. DO NOT attach anything to the mailboxes. To identify mailboxes for note service distribution, you should contact the Office of Student Engagement and Success.
- Mailboxes are to be used for student-to-student correspondence. Grades and other private academic information must not be distributed through student mailboxes.
- Please use sound, professional judgment as you place items in your colleague’s mailboxes. We ask that students respect other people's rights by not placing unwanted materials in their mailboxes.
- Mailboxes are not secure. We advise you NOT to place items of value in mailboxes.
The LeBlanc Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL) is located in the east rooms of the McPhail building. It encompasses a large lab space with an open floor plan for hands-on student instruction, which may be a live animal, wet lab, or model demonstrational activities. The CSL also has several smaller open-access rooms for students to use on-demand to practice hands-on skills with state-of-the-art and exclusive design models. The CSL has many high-value and high-impact models and equipment for students' use. Professional dress, professional etiquette, respect for others' learning, and respect for the models are always expected. For safety reasons, the open-access rooms are not to be used by less than two students at any time. Students will read the CSL House Rules document and sign in and out of the open-access rooms for each visit. Students who use the CSL will clean all learning stations and models and reset stations when finished.
The Learning and Assessment Center (LAC) helps prepare health professions students to develop and demonstrate competence in basic tasks and skills through in-depth, hands-on training. It is an important extension of their classroom training, allowing them to expand and fine-tune their abilities before going into a real-life setting. The LAC and College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) are committed to acquiring and developing virtual and simulation models to practice hands-on skills. As a component of your education, you will have the opportunity to practice communication, physical examination, and skills in a controlled, safe learning environment. Client communication and physical examination skills are performed on “standardized clients” and their pets. The interactions are recorded and reviewed to facilitate your learning in these key areas of medical training.
Building Safety and Security
See more and sign up for MSU alerts on the Department of Police and Public Safety webpage here.
Information about campus security and crimes on campus is maintained and reported by the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act. On its website, DPPS reports incidents occurring in the most recent 60 days. For more information, or to view this log, visit the DPPS webpage here.
Veterinary students must complete safety training during their veterinary education through Michigan State University (MSU) Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the American Veterinary Medical Association AVMA-PLIT. The required training modules are available online and are subject to change. As of July 2022, these are the VMC Safety Training Requirements and the associated deadlines for completion. The EHS training tracks will be Auto Assigned. Access to the AVMA training through the AVMA-PLIT site.
Students are required to complete the training within the academic year indicated. Failure to comply will result in disenrollment until the training is complete.
More information regarding required Environmental Health and Safety trainings may be found on their webpage here.
All students are required to complete Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM) Training to maintain enrollment. See more about RVSM training on their webpage here.
