Welcome to the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM)!
The MSU CVM DVM Student Handbook is published electronically by the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine for students in the CVM Graduate Professional (DVM) Program. This handbook is current and in effect for the 2025 – 2026 academic year. The College reserves the right to update or add information throughout the academic year and will notify current students via email of any substantive changes to policies or procedures. All students in the DVM program are responsible for the content of this handbook and are expected to abide by all policies of MSU and the CVM.

The CVM is approved by MSU to offer a graduate professional degree program in veterinary medicine. Students who complete the curriculum and requirements are recommended by the faculty of the College for conferral of the DVM degree by the MSU Board of Trustees. Following graduation, DVMs may enter directly into clinical practice, pursue an internship or residency, or continue their education through other advanced degree programs.
In recognition of the high standards of achievement for veterinary medical education, the MSU CVM has been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education (AVMA COE) since its inception.
The AVMA COE is the accrediting body for schools and programs that offer the professional DVM degree or its equivalent in the US and Canada. The Council may also approve foreign veterinary colleges.
Accreditation by the AVMA COE represents the highest standard of achievement for veterinary medical education in the United States. Institutions that earn accreditation confirm their commitment to quality and continuous improvement through a rigorous and comprehensive peer review.
To be fully accredited by the AVMA COE, a college of veterinary medicine must meet all defined Standards of Accreditation.
Graduating from an institute accredited by the AVMA COE institution is a prerequisite for licensure or certification for professional practice by most state licensing boards and credentialing agencies to meet the educational prerequisites.
The standards of the AVMA COE are designed so that students enrolled in accredited programs receive an education which will prepare them for entry-level positions in the profession. As a student, these standards must be shared with you, as they should become your educational goals.

A cornerstone of the College’s mission is the delivery of educational programs. The College’s academic programs include the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Nursing, postgraduate DVM veterinary internship and residency programs, and graduate training at the Master and Doctor of Philosophy levels.
As DVM students, your primary contacts will be the Interim Associate Dean of Professional Education and the Interim Associate Dean of Student Engagement and Success. Dr. Kimberly Dodd is the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Office of the Dean also includes Research and Graduate Studies, Veterinary Nursing, the Office of Inclusivity and Strategic Partnerships, the Office of Finance, the Office of Human Resources, Development and Alumni Relations, and the Office of Marketing and Communications.
The Directors and Chairpersons of the individual departments and service units support the Dean by managing the day-to-day responsibilities of their respective departments and units. There are three CVM-only and two shared departments in the College. More information regarding college departments can be found here.
The two service units of the College are the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). The VMC will serve as your clinical training hospital, and VDL will provide diagnostic support to your clinical patients and clinical training in necropsy and pathology.
In addition to the Office of the Dean, departments, and service units, the College has “Standing Committees” or “permanent” committees. The Bylaws of the College charter standing committees. The Standing Committees’ members are faculty members responsible for representing their departments. Standing Committees are advisory to the Dean of the College on policy and process matters. As will be discussed under Student Organization, there are also student representatives on select College Standing Committees. A list of the committees and their membership lists can be found here.

“On this day, as I begin pursuit of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, I earnestly commit myself to professional development. This includes not only the acquisition of scientific knowledge, but also personal development.
I recognize the veterinarian’s role as a leader in society and will begin to learn my chosen profession from this day forward with integrity and in keeping with the standards of the college and the principles of veterinary medical ethics.
As a professional student, I pledge to respect and show compassion for my fellow students, college faculty and staff, the animals under my care, and animal owners. I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence.”
