An animal welfare scientist by training, my research sits at the intersection between applied ethology (animal behavior) and social science. Much of my focus is on the human element of animal welfare, for example in untangling how various groups interpret animal welfare challenges and perceive barriers to resolution. My applied research interests include pain assessment and mitigation for routine livestock procedures and application of environmental enrichment to improve behavior and welfare outcomes in a range of captive species. I am also passionate about building animal welfare capacity and skills amongst students training for careers with animals, with particular attention to veterinary students.
