The Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine has been selected to host the 2028 Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) Symposium, marking the first time the College has hosted the national event in more than four decades.

The announcement follows a successful proposal presented by MSU SAVMA Senior Delegate Madeleine Crawford and Junior Delegate Katherine West at the 2026 SAVMA Symposium in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the SAVMA House of Delegates voted to award MSU the 2028 event.

Held annually each March at veterinary schools across the United States, the SAVMA Symposium brings together veterinary students for educational sessions, hands-on learning opportunities, and professional networking. The event highlights areas of veterinary medicine not typically covered in standard curricula while fostering connections among future colleagues.

MSU last hosted the symposium in 1983. The opportunity to bring the event back to East Lansing reflects both the strength of the College’s program and the enthusiasm of its student leadership.

“The SAVMA Symposium is an incredible experience that brings together veterinary students from different programs for educational, social, and networking opportunities,” says Crawford. “The Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine has not hosted this event in recent memory, and we believe that the exciting changes that have occurred since then are worth sharing with our colleagues and the broader veterinary community.”

Crawford adds, “I am so grateful that I chose to study here, and I am proud to be a Spartan and part of a class that truly embodies the values of our College. Hosting this event is an incredible opportunity to showcase why we love our school and the impact it has had on us as future veterinarians, and in turn, on the profession as a whole.”

Planning for the 2028 SAVMA Symposium will begin in the coming months, with support from College leadership and partners, including the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.
