The College’s Veterinary Nursing teacher of the year is voted on by the second-year veterinary nursing students transitioning to clinical education.

This year, Gina Malpeli, LVT, Veterinary Nursing instructor and alum of the College, was awarded the honor.

Malpeli started her veterinary nursing career in private practice with a focus on emergency medicine and neurology, achieving the role of lead nurse and mentor. In 2015, she joined the surgery team at MSU’s Veterinary Medical Center, progressing to a leadership role. By Fall of 2022, she began her dream career as a faculty instructor for Veterinary Nursing, where she imparts knowledge and skills to the next generation of veterinary nurses.

“Gina is more than an instructor; she is an inspiration. She challenges us to think critically, reflect deeply, and grow—not just as professionals, but as people. She believes learning should be fun, that mutual respect is the foundation of education, and that we are capable of far more than we sometimes realize. Her compassion, optimism, and unwavering support create an uplifting environment where we feel valued, empowered, and ready to take on the challenges of this profession. She leads by example, showing us what it means to be compassionate, hardworking, and deeply committed to making a difference,” says Julia Hoffman, Veterinary Nursing student.

“It is a true privilege to be a part of this class’s journey, and I am incredibly humbled and honored to be recognized in this way. It is a wonderful gift in life to do something that you love so much with the people you care about so much and none of that is possible—or even matters—if it isn’t for amazing colleagues and incredible students. I am so very proud of this class. Watching them grow, not only in skills and knowledge, but also confidence and character, is the greatest reward I could ever ask for,” says Malpeli.
