On March 6, 2026, the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences hosted a continuing education day for large animal veterinarians, during which the College recognized two practitioners, both alumni, for their impact on the profession.
Dr. Jeffrey Bunn (DVM ’90) was honored with the Rooker Award for Equine Excellence. Practicing with Equine Medical, LLC in Howell, Michigan, since 1994, Bunn has also devoted a considerable amount of time to supporting the education of future veterinarians: supporting MSU’s past ambulatory program, conducting student podiatry labs, and participating in the Equine Welfare in Practice clerkship in Mexico.
Dr. Julia Coyle (DVM ’16) was honored with the Early Career Equine Practitioner Award. She has practiced with Equine Veterinary Hospital in Wakarusa, Indiana, since 2017, where in addition to seeing patients, she oversees educational programs for veterinary and pre-veterinary students.
About Continuing Education Day
As a yearly tradition, the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences welcomes a group of large animal veterinarians to campus for a day of seminars, presentations, and hands-on demonstrations with faculty. Each session provides practitioners with relevant clinical advice based on faculty research and experience.
The 2026 event featured guest lecturer John Peroni, DVM, MS, DACVS, the Dr. Steeve Guiguère Memorial Professor at the University of Georgia. As an equine surgeon with expertise in regenerative medicine, his lecture covered the mechanisms, evidence-based usage, and rationale of orthobiologics in horses.
Other presentations dived into topics such as large animal anesthesia, the latest in surgical solutions for injury, updates on infectious diseases, and more, including an optional wet lab on thoracic and abdominal ultrasonography.
