Controlled Substances 101 with Jan Woods

Complimentary CE at MSU College of Veterinary Medicine

Join us at the College of Veterinary Medicine on Wednesday, December 2, for a three-hour continuing education presentation with nationally recognized speaker and regulatory consultant Jan Woods.

Controlled Substances 101: How & Why You Must Comply! DEA and Michigan Regs Explained will help all veterinary professionals better understand federal and state requirements, strengthen compliance practices, and reduce risk.

Drawing on her experience as a former veterinary practice owner and hospital administrator, Jan will share practical guidance on regulatory requirements, efficient controlled substance management, and ways to protect your team and practice.

• DEA and Michigan regulations: Understand federal and state-controlled substance requirements across a variety of veterinary practice settings.

• Controlled substance management: Review requirements for ordering, receiving, storing, documenting, administering, dispensing, prescribing, transferring, and disposing of controlled substances.

• Recordkeeping and inventory: Explore practical ways to simplify daily reconciliation, improve inventory accuracy, and maintain required records.

• Audits, security, and risk reduction: Learn how to prepare for a DEA audit, understand reporting and response requirements for loss or theft, strengthen security, and understand what to do if the DEA arrives.

• Recognizing and responding to addiction: Discuss how to recognize and address addiction among staff, peers, and clients, including practitioner responsibilities under DEA regulations.

Jan Woods brings decades of experience in healthcare and veterinary medicine, including veterinary hospital ownership and leadership, regulatory and operational consulting, and professional education. She co-authored the controlled substances section of the AVMA-PLIT Veterinary Safety Manual and regularly presents nationally on DEA compliance and veterinary practice operations.

Who Should Attend: MSU CVM alumni, faculty, staff, and community members who are veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, practice managers, inventory managers, assistants, or other veterinary team members involved in controlled substance handling and compliance.

Ample time for questions and discussion will be included throughout the presentation. There will also be pizza available for attendees (salad will be available to those with dietary restrictions upon request).

We hope you’ll join us for this informative opportunity to strengthen your understanding of controlled substance compliance and bring practical strategies back to your practice. Be sure to bring a notepad and pen!
