The mission of Michigan State University’s Digital Slide Scanning Core Facility (DSSC) is to provide high-resolution and high-throughput digital scans (virtual images) of whole glass slides containing tissues or cells for advanced microscopy research and education.
Equipment
The SLIDEVIEW (formally Olympus) VS200 slide scanner converts high-resolution microscopic images of biologic tissues or cells on whole glass slides into digitized images through a fully automated high-speed scanning and tiling process.
It provides flexibility with five imaging modes, multiplexing capabilities, and multiple magnifications up to 60X. The scanner generates high quality digitized images for accurate quantitative and spatial analyses.
Services and Capabilities
- Digitization of whole glass slides
- Multiple imaging modes: Brightfield, darkfield, fluorescence, polarization and phase contrast
- Brightfield scanning: 20x or 40x magnification for histologic scans, and 60x oil for cytologic scans
- Immunofluorescence scanning: 20x or 40x. Available channels include DAPI, FITC, TRITC and Cy5
- Scanning of 1 x 3 in. or 2 x 3 in. glass slides
Slide Preparation
- Slides should be clean and free from excessive mounting media
- Please ensure slides are dry. Please inform DSSC if slides are fresh or using an aqueous mounting media
- DSSC will briefly clean each slide with a Kim Wipe and any overhanging labels or excessive media will be removed by a razor blade
Submission
Effective October 1, 2026, slide submissions can be entered through the Stratocore Pilot Project Management System.
