What is Buiatrics?

Buiatrics is the craft of curing sick cattle.

Dr. Ángel Abuelo, associate professor of cattle health at the Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine, MSU AgBioResearcher, and dairy veterinarian for MSU Extension, has been selected for the President’s Award from the World Association for Buiatrics (WAB) for his presentations at the 2022 World Buiatrics Congress in Madrid. The President’s Award identifies a young, future leader in buiatrics, and encourages winners to consider leadership in WAB.

“It is a great honor to receive this award. The WAB Congress is the world’s reference meeting for diseases and production of cattle, and one I have been attending since I was a veterinary student. The quality of the science presented at the last conference was outstanding, making this recognition even more meaningful to me. It is fantastic to see the work my laboratory does to advance dairy cattle health and train the next generations of dairy veterinarians gaining international attention, and this could not be possible without the dedication of my students and collaborators, and the support my program receives from MSU and the Michigan dairy industry,” says Abuelo.

Candidates for the 2022 WAB’s President’s Award presented a minimum of two oral presentations at the Congress. Presenters and presentations were scored by the Awards Committee based on applicant achievements, professional tracking, quality of presentation, impact of content, and personal qualities.

At the 2022 WAB World Congress, Abuelo gave two invited talks in immunology, two invited talks in education and professional development, and presented a poster. He also co-organized a forum on models and strategies in bovine clinical education.

“Being acknowledged as an emerging leader in the field of bovine medicine is rewarding, particularly because there are many promising young cattle veterinarians worldwide, several of whom also presented at the World Buiatrics Congress. I have had some fulfilling involvements in organized veterinary medicine so far, and this award just further fueled my interest in seeking more developmental opportunities that would help me have a greater impact on veterinary medicine organizations in the future,” says Abuelo.

Abuelo will accept his award of €3,000 at the 2024 World Buiatrics Congress in Cancun, Mexico.
