What does it take to raise happier, healthier cows?
Dr. Pedro Trindade, assistant professor of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, investigates ways to overcome challenges in farm animal welfare and health using data science approaches — more specifically, optimizing the acute pain monitoring in farm animals.
He outlines his lab's three-stage research project using data and technology to decode calf and heifer pain and inflammation.
Research conducted at the Trindade Lab has been supported in part by a College of Veterinary Medicine Endowed Research Funds grant (pilot study) from Michigan State University (MSU); and by the Michigan Alliance for Animal Agriculture (M-AAA), project ID number AA-25-013 and AA-25-032, from AgBioResearch and MSU Extension at Michigan State University, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
