Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine has launched two new veterinary podcasts in the first two months of 2025: Dogtors Without Borders and Extraordinary Vets.
These podcasts highlight the work of veterinarians within and outside the College, as well as provide insights into veterinary careers and unique veterinary cases, projects, and achievements. Both are available to listen to on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Dogtors Without Borders puts two MSU-affiliated veterinary professionals, students, and support staff in conversation with each other, whether they are clinicians, faculty, or veterinary nurses at the MSU Veterinary Medical Center, alumni, administrators, or researchers.
Its first episode was released on January 29, 2025, and featured Drs. Chris Thibault and Sara Taylor, veterinary anesthesia faculty, discussing the importance of teamwork, the unique challenges of anesthetizing different species, and advice for aspiring specialists.
The podcast was conceived by the College to inform those curious about the hidden depths of veterinary medicine and to highlight the incredible work of MSU veterinary professionals all over the world.
Listeners from the general public will have their eyes opened to the surprising breadth of the veterinary field. Current veterinary and pre-veterinary students will find insights on veterinary careers, while veterinary professionals from anywhere will get a deeper dive into what colleagues from other specialties are most excited about, what it means to be an MSU Vet, and the services, clinical trials, teaching, and research this entails.
Extraordinary Vets is hosted by Dr. Donna Harris, assistant professor at the College, who interviews veterinarians who have carved out unique and impactful careers. These inspiring stories of veterinarians who have blended passion, innovation, and dedication show there is no one path for those interested in helping animals and people.
The first episode—featuring Dr. Debbye Turner Bell, who is not only a DVM, but also a motivational speaker, journalist, and Miss America 1990—was published on February 18, 2025. Turner Bell takes listeners on a journey through all the twists and turns of her career path and how each stop allowed her to hone her skills and get her where she is today.
“It’s focused on the career pathways of veterinarians who have done extraordinary things or carved out a unique career for themselves,” Harris explains.
“I want the podcast to inspire students who aren’t certain what they want to do, and veterinarians in the field who are in a specific career path that doesn’t feel right to them,” she says. “Because this profession is unbelievably open to lots of different opportunities.”
Harris’s podcast will inspire, educate, and illuminate the broad variety of careers in veterinary medicine for anyone—regardless of veterinary knowledge—with interest in seeing what a veterinarian can accomplish beyond the clinic.
