"The father of veterinary public health" celebrated his 100th birthday this year

James H. Steele (DVM ’41) died peacefully in his sleep Sunday November 10, 2013.

His life's work shaped the understanding of disease transmission between animals and people and significantly advanced approaches to public health in government and academic sectors. Steele’s biography, One Man, One Medicine, One Health: The James H. Steele Story was published in 2009 and an article on Steele appears in the April 2013 issue of Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The 21st Annual James H. Steele Lecture was on April 2, 2013. Family, friends, former colleagues, and students traveled to University of Texas School of Public Health from around the world to celebrate with Steele. The keynote address was given by Lonnie King, dean of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and former dean of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
