Are you prepared in case of an emergency for your four-legged friend?

As a pet owner, you should make sure you have basic pet first aid supplies in your home. Keep this kit next to your family's first aid kit to ensure you are ready for an emergency. You can download our pet first aid kit checklist here

Emergency numbers. The emergency phone number for the Veterinary Medical Center's Small Animal Clinic is 517-353-5420.

Gauze for wrapping your pet's wounds.

Non-stick bandages, clean towels, or strips of cloth to control bleeding or cover open wounds.

Adhesive tape for securing the gauze or bandage. Do not use human adhesive bandages, such as Band-Aids.

Scissors with blunt ends to cut the gauze or tape.

Digital thermometer to check your pet's temperature. You will need a “fever” thermometer because regular thermometers do not measure high enough for pets. Do not insert a thermometer into your pet’s mouth; you must take their temperature rectally. Normal temperature for dogs is between 101-102.5°F. Normal temperature for cats is between 99.5-102.5°F.

Leash or carrier (for small dogs or cats) to transport your pet. Only use a leash if your pet is capable of walking without further injury.

Eye dropper to give oral treatments or flush wounds.

Sterile saline eye wash to flush smoke or debris from your pet's eyes.

Remember that any first aid administered to a pet should always be followed by veterinary care. First aid is not a substitute for veterinary care. For the safety of your pet, keep all medicine and medical supplies out of the reach of pets and children.
