A founding father of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology, launched in 2002, Harold Tvedten (DVM ’71, MS ’72, PhD ’75) continues to make contributions to veterinary medicine. In 2012, he was promoted to professor of Clinical Sciences and received a centrally funded professor of clinical chemistry position at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He received the first European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ESVCP) Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in Dublin 2011.

Tvedten is a diplomate of the American College of Pathology in both anatomic pathology and clinical pathology and of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. He retired in October 2000 after 26 years in veterinary pathology with the MSU Department of Pathology (now Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigations) and immigrated to Sweden, where he has worked in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, as well as Strömsholm Referral Veterinary Hospital.

Also in 2012, Elsevier Press published the 5th edition of "Small Animal Clinical Diagnosis by Laboratory Methods" by Tvedten and Michael D. Willard, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Texas A&M University. The previous four editions have sold more than 33,000 copies. At the time of the first edition, Willard taught Internal Medicine in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at MSU, where he worked from 1980 to 1988.
