Hilda Mejia Abreu, PhD, has been named acting assistant dean for the Office of Admissions at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Her appointment is effective March 21, 2016.
Mejia Abreu, continues to serve as assistant dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the College. She returned to MSU in January 2016. She previously served as the director of Admissions from 1993 to 1997 and as the assistant dean for Admissions and Student Affairs from 1997 to 2009. With Admissions, Mejia Abreu designed and implemented recruitment activities that increased the student body by over 35%.
“I am honored and humbled to be offered this privilege to function as acting assistant dean for Admissions. I am excited by the opportunity to follow the ground work laid the past few years by the current Admissions team and my colleague Dr. Baptista,” says Mejia .Abreu “I look forward to partnering with the Admissions team and welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with Academic Programs and Student Success, faculty, staff, students, and graduates as we advance the CVM mission with evidence-based practice in the field of Enrollment Management.”
In 2009, Mejia Abreu joined the University of Texas Health Science Center as the associate dean for Admissions and Student Affairs for the School of Nursing. In this position, she developed and implemented a recruitment strategy that increased enrollment by 45% in four years with increased diversity of students.
After her time at the University of Texas, Mejia Abreu went on to work for Liaison International, the leading provider of centralized application services for veterinary medicine, nursing, dental, and other health professions, as their executive director for program partnerships and higher education content expert.
Mejia Abreu earned her master of science degree in public affairs from the University of Massachusetts in 1992 and her doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University in 2013.
Norma Baptista, PhD, who has successfully led the Office of Admissions since 2009, plans to retire from the College in mid-Summer. Mejia Abreu and Baptista will work together during this transition.
