On July 20, the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Animal Science, and MSU Extension helped sponsor the 19th Annual Great Dairy Adventure—a free annual event at the MSU Pavilion that gives attendees an inside look at Michigan’s dairy industry. Attendees at the Great Dairy Adventure were able to see and pet real cows, practice milking on simulation models, learn how milk goes from farm to table in 48 hours, enjoy free dairy treats, and more.

There were many different stations teaching about the dairy industry.

The Great Dairy Adventure is part of the Michigan Dairy Expo, Michigan’s largest annual dairy event. The Expo encourages youth participation in dairy activities, showcases the Michigan dairy industry, and provides continuing education opportunities.

“The Great Dairy Adventure highlights the connection that the dairy industry has with local communities,” said Dr. Dan Grooms, chair of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. “The MSU College of Veterinary Medicine is working to continue strengthening that connection. Being able to teach children about how the health and care of animals affects their lives helps plant that seed of interest early on. The veterinary profession plays an important role in cow health and therefore an important role in public health. Events like this help to highlight this important role.”

Second-year veterinary student Sarah Woodruff, who plans to go into production medicine, and first-year veterinary student Caelah Doerr were at this year’s Great Dairy Adventure to supervise the College exhibits. This was Sarah’s second year working at the Great Dairy Adventure, and her favorite part is working with the attendees.

“I love the kids, they have the best questions,” said Sarah. “They ask things like, ‘Why does that smell?’ ‘What is this?’ They’re funny, and I like teaching, so that’s the best part.”

The Great Dairy Adventure isn’t just a learning opportunity. There are plenty of entertaining stations and events, like the Fun Run. New this year, children lined up to run a lap with MSU student athletes and Sparty. Afterwards, they enjoyed some chocolate milk to refuel and rehydrate.
