Hilda Mejia Abreu, PhD, has been appointed assistant dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Mejia Abreu will spearhead the College’s commitment to shaping a community strengthened by the talents of people with diverse experiences and backgrounds. She will oversee the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and is committed to advancing the mission of both the Office and the College.
“Dr. Mejia Abreu will play a pivotal role in advancing our College,” said College of Veterinary Medicine Dean John Baker. “As leaders in our industry, it is imperative that we are recognized and celebrated as the college that recruits and retains students and faculty from all backgrounds.”
This is a return to the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine for Mejia Abreu, who served as the director of Admissions from 1993 to 1997 and as the assistant dean for Admissions and Student Services from 1997 to 2009. As the assistant dean, Mejia Abreu designed and implemented recruitment activities that increased the student body by over 35%. Her appointment was effective January 4, 2016.
In 2009, Mejia Abreu joined the University of Texas Health Science Center as the associate dean for Admissions and Student Services for the School of Nursing. In this position, she developed and implemented a recruitment strategy that increased enrollment by 45% in four years with increased diversity of students.
After her time at the University of Texas, Mejia Abreu went on to work for Liaison International, the leading provider of centralized application services for veterinary medicine, nursing, dental, and other health professions, as their executive director for program partnerships and higher education content expert.
Mejia Abreu earned her master of science degree in public affairs from the University of Massachusetts in 1992 and her doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University in 2013.
“I have derived a greater satisfaction working at MSU than anywhere else in 25 years,” said Mejia Abreu. “I came back because I saw a great opportunity to enhance the mission of this College. Team members in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion are committed to attracting, recruiting, and retaining students, staff, administrators, interns, residents, and faculty from all backgrounds, and I hope that we can make a demonstrable and measurable contribution to this great university.”
