The MSU Veterinary Medical Center has welcomed Megan Spedoske as the new program coordinator of Veterinary Social Work Services. Spedoske is a Licensed Master of Social Work with 12 years of experience in nonprofit agencies and expertise in grief, loss, and trauma issues.

“As a lifelong animal owner who has experienced several animal losses, I recognize the strength of the human-animal bond,” said Spedoske. “Normalizing the grief that people may experience following the death of an animal is important so they learn what to expect and how to cope.”

The Veterinary Social Work Service (VSWS) is a collaboration between the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine and the MSU School of Social Work. VSWS offers emotional support to clients, veterinarians, and staff of the Hospital and the community at large during their most challenging times as a pet owner—counseling during difficult treatments, such as chemotherapy, and emotional support for difficult decisions and the euthanasia process.

“The services we provide are designed to offer support that’s tailored to pet owners,” said Spedoske. “Community outreach is important for our program to make the greatest impact.”

VSWS also offers a Pet Loss Support Group and a Pet Loss Support Hotline. For more information about VSWS, contact 517-432-5967 or VSW@cvm.msu.edu.
