The College’s Mentorship Program

The College is excited to announce a new mentorship program, and even more excited to ask you to join in mentoring future veterinary professionals!

As you know, the College’s Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Technology Programs are rigorous, and a support system is essential to student success. That is why the College created the House System in 2017, which sorts students into one of four houses. It is designed to bring together faculty, staff, and students to build community and facilitate student wellness and success.

This year, the College is weaving a mentorship component into the House System. The College is recruiting its valued alumni to join this journey and provide social and professional mentorship to veterinary medical and veterinary technology students.

Each mentor will be sorted into a house and randomly assigned four veterinary medicine students and one veterinary technology student from the same house.

The Program will be managed by house faculty, as well as students, with support from the Office of Admissions, Student Life, and Inclusivity. The Program will be led by an advisor, who will help facilitate communications and create opportunities for interactions between mentors and mentees. All members of the Program will receive training, be provided with resources outlining mentor and mentee responsibilities, and be given the tools necessary to provide students with social, emotional, and professional support.

Mentors will help support learners using their own experiences, knowledge, and understanding of life in the field of veterinary medicine. Through a variety of communication means (email, phone, text, or in-person), mentors will visit with students and answer their questions. Mentors may engage their group in a monthly Skype chat, meet during a horse show at the Pavilion, visit at an MSU football game, share interesting research or articles, or just be there when mentees need support.

MMI Volunteer Opportunity

The College is looking for alumni volunteers to serve as Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) evaluators!

MMIs are a part of the College’s admissions evaluation process. During MMIs, prospective students visit the campus to sit for seven six-minute interviews. The students read a scenario and then sit with an evaluator to answer a series

of questions pertaining to the scenarios.

Evaluators rate candidates based on communication skills, ethics, cultural competency, empathy, resiliency, and grit. Those ratings are used to make admissions decisions. The College provides evaluator training each year that includes role-playing scenarios and how to score students using comprehensive rubrics.

Contact the College’s Admissions Team at admiss@cvm.msu.edu for more information on volunteering with MMIs.
