Research Program

  • To identify the association between the chemical activities of ambient air pollutants and the malignant behavior of human lung cancer and related biomarkers
  • Understanding how multi-pollutant interactions (e.g., particulate matter, vapor and ozone) contribute to asthma pathogenesis and exacerbation
  • Investigating the mechanisms by which air pollutants of different sources (e.g., vehicular emissions, commercial cooking and biomass combustion) promote asthma

Current Investigation

  • The impact of changes in amount and composition of ambient air pollutants on the induction and progression of human lung cancer and underlying mechanisms
  • The additive/synergistic adjuvant effects of multi-pollutant interactions on allergic sensitization
  • Interference with antigen presenting dendritic cell function as a major mechanism for the pro-allergic and pro-inflammatory effects of commercial charbroiling meat emissions
  • The role of oxidative stress in cellular injuries induced by sugarcane-burning smoke in normal and asthmatic human airway epithelial cells

Funding Sources

  • South Coast Air Quality Management District, CA
  • MSU internal funding: OVPRGS, CVM, COM
