Dr. Zelmar Rodriguez is a veterinarian and epidemiologist serving as an Assistant Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. He leads the DRIVE Lab (Dairy Research, Innovation, and Veterinary Epidemiology), an integrated research and extension program focused on improving biosecurity, disease control, and sustainability in dairy production systems.

Dr. Rodriguez earned his DVM and worked in dairy practice before completing a PhD in Veterinary Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota, followed by a postdoctoral appointment at Michigan State University, before his current appointment.

His current research applies quantitative epidemiology, on-farm surveillance, and data-driven technologies to address real-world challenges in dairy health, with particular emphasis on emerging diseases, milk quality, antimicrobial stewardship, and the wildlife–livestock interface.

His program integrates field studies, longitudinal population-level data, and advanced analytical tools to develop practical, science-based management strategies. Dr. Rodriguez also teaches veterinary and graduate students in epidemiologic and data-science methods and mentor trainees at multiple levels. His work bridges research and practice, delivering solutions that support the long-term resilience of the dairy industry.
