On January 1, two esteemed faculty from the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine retired—Dr. Kent Ames and Dr. Steven Arnoczky. This weekend, Dr. Steven Arnoczky is giving his last lecture at the Michigan Veterinary Conference.
Kent Ames, DVM, MS, is a professor emeritus in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. He has earned multiple honors and awards, most of which relate to his skills as an educator. On working at MSU, Dr. Ames paid tribute to his true inspiration.
“MSU is everything, it’s my career, and I just adore the students,” said Ames. “They literally have made my career.”
Ames plans to spend time at his house up North, with his grandchildren, woodworking, and looking for opportunities to work with bees, particularly in regards to the veterinary feed directive.
Steven Arnoczky, DVM, DACVS, DACVSMR, is a professor emeritus in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences and director of the Laboratory for Comparative Orthopaedic Research. In 1992, Arnoczky was named the first Wade O. Brinker Endowed Professor in Veterinary Surgery, and held that title for 25 years.
“Having the opportunity to be the first Wade O. Brinker Endowed Chair in Veterinary Surgery here at the College has been the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Arnoczky. “The chance to work with the world-class faculty and staff here has been the highlight of my professional career. I hope I have been able to honor Dr. Brinker’s legacy with our work.”
During his retirement, Arnoczky will be consulting for the human orthopedic industry, as well as participating in post-graduate education for orthopedic residents and surgeons. Additionally, he will participate in committee work at the College while finishing some research papers with his veterinary and human medicine students. Arnoczky’s most important plans include more fishing and travel with his wife.
