While there are many reasons to support animal health, Matt and Kathleen Davis needed only one.
In recent months, the Davises donated a $1 million estate gift to the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as a cash pledge to assist small animal owners who can’t afford emergency care for their pet. This donation is in addition to a $1 million gift to the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, Matt’s alma mater (’86).
The Davis family decided to give to the College after their beloved dachshund, Mercedes, spent time at MSU’s Small Animal Clinic for a ruptured disc in her back. The clinical team cared for Mercedes as their own and kept Kathleen up-to-date with daily photos. Their positive experience inspired the Mercedes Davis Fund, which Matt and Kathleen hope will help pet owners who lack the financial means to afford care when their pet experiences a life-threatening situation or other change in their health status.
“If we can help responsible pet owners who have the best intentions of getting their pet through a health challenge, then we are ready to help them through this fund,” says Kathleen. “Family pets provide so much love and joy, and we feel they deserve the best care possible.”
Dr. Sarah Shull and MSU’s Rehabilitation Service team took care of Mercedes while she was at MSU. “Working with clients like the Davises and with dogs like Mercedes is truly rewarding,” says Shull. “Mercedes was an integral part of their lives, and it was obvious they wanted the best for her in every decision they made. Their gift will improve the care of the pets while impacting every member of the healthcare teams serving these pets and families.”
“We are honored that Matt and Kathleen have chosen to honor Mercedes by making such a generous gift to the College,” adds Birgit Puschner, dean for the College. “This fund will have an impact on countless families and pets, and it will help us continue enacting the College’s mission to heal.”
The Davises live in Bay Harbor, Michigan with their two dachshunds, Lola and Bailey. Matt is currently president of Driftwood Leadership, LLC, which focuses on leadership strategies and inspirational training for organizations and individuals. Kathleen worked in communications at Dow, where she and Matt met, and both are now involved in several community organizations, including animal rescues. Additionally, Matt and Kathleen are active members of the MSU community; Kathleen considers herself a proud “Spartan-by-marriage,” and Matt serves on the College of Communication Arts and Sciences Alumni Board.
“My success is related to my education and the faculty at MSU,” says Matt. “I want to pay it forward with the College of Veterinary Medicine fund. We are proud to support the College.”
