  • Internship in Small Animal Surgery, University of Tokyo, 2005-2006

Dr. Keiko Miyadera earned her DVM from the University of Tokyo, where she discovered her passion for genetics from researching hereditary diseases affecting beef cattle in her hometown of southern Japan. Dr. Miyadera then pursued advanced training in genetics research, focusing on hereditary retinal diseases in dogs, which led to her earning a PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK.

She continued her endeavor at the University of Pennsylvania, investigating dogs with inherited eye diseases as animal models. After completing a residency in ophthalmology, she remained on the faculty at Penn. Her expansive work includes the clinical characterization of new forms of eye diseases, genome-wide assays to identify disease causal variants, the investigation of disease onset mechanisms, and the development of gene therapies targeting different cell types in the eye.

As of 2024, Dr. Miyadera is thrilled to join the faculty at MSU. The Miyadera lab aims to understand the genetic basis of inherited eye diseases that threaten vision, which affect both animals and humans. By studying rare monogenic diseases as well as more common diseases influenced by genetic modifiers, the Miyadera lab seeks to uncover new therapeutic targets and establish effective strategies for managing hereditary eye diseases.
