James W. Lloyd has been named dean of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Lloyd, who leaves his current position as Associate Dean for Budget, Planning, and Institutional Research at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, has served the college in varying capacities since 1983.
“For Jim, we are excited about this new adventure, but this is certainly a loss to the college and to the entire MSU community,” says Chris Brown, dean of the college. “He has a unique mix of skills and gifts and his leadership on curriculum, planning, and management will be sorely missed by the college. His influence on policy as well as on the culture of the college can’t really be overstated.”
Lloyd earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from MSU in 1981 and a PhD in agricultural economics from MSU in 1989. He is jointly appointed in the Departments of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics. He has worked to progressively apply the disciplines of economics, management, and business to the veterinary medical profession through research, teaching, and service/administration.
He is a member of and active in numerous professional associations and served on the executive committee of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association from 2007 through 2011, serving as its president in 2010. His history of active involvement with the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges includes both extensive committee work and sustained advocacy initiatives on Capitol Hill.
As a veterinarian and an economist, Dr. Lloyd has published more than 165 journal articles, technical reports, proceedings and book chapters. He has taught extensively in both pre-clinical and clinical settings, with emphasis on epidemiology, food safety, herd health management, production medicine, veterinary medical career development, and veterinary practice management.
“As a professional and as an individual, he is second to none,” says Brown. “I speak for the college community when I say he will be missed.”
