Animal Welfare Judging Team brings home awards from the annual competition.

The 13th Annual Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Judging and Assessment Competition took place November 23-24, 2013, at the University of Guelph.

The MSU team, composed of team captain Kathryn Barber (DVM' 16), Allison Bunting (DVM'16), Tiffany Azevedo (DVM'16), and Cassandra Harding (DVM'17), and coached Dalen Agnew, DVM, PhD, and Carla Carleton, DVM, MS, DACT, took third place overall and second in the team assessment exercise. The MSU College of Veterinary Medicine team's participation was made possible with the financial support of the College Feeding Program Fund and the AVMA.


The contest, which was founded at MSU in 2002, saw a record number of contestants this year. Teams came from the US, Canada, the UK, and the Caribbean, and participated in undergraduate, graduate, and veterinary divisions.

Results Highlights

  • The MSU veterinary team took third place overall and second in the team assessment exercise.
  • The MSU undergraduate team, coached by Dana Campbell, Marisa Erasmus and Sarahbeth Barlas took second place overall.
  • Victoria Blake from MSU Animal Science, was the first place undergraduate individual.
  • Colorado State University undergraduate teams coached by MSU alumna Chelsey Shivley (DVM ’12), won and placed third, and were the high scoring team for the team assessment exercise.
  • The University of Guelph won the graduate division.
  • University College Dublin won the veterinary student division.
