Students from the College of Veterinary Medicine and affiliated departments and colleges share their research at the 24th annual event.
Hundreds of faculty members, students, and scholars from across Michigan State University gathered on October 3 to view and listen to more than 60 oral and poster presentations.
During the Phi Zeta Research Day awards ceremonies, Dr. Charles Mackenzie was presented with the Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence for his many contributions to human and animal health around the world. Stephanie Halley, ('15), received the MSU Veterinary Student Research Award for her work on three dimensional, radiosteriometric analysis (RSA) of equine stifle kinematics and articular surface contact under Dr. Steven Arnoczky's mentorship.
Presentation of Awards for Excellence in Anatomy Courses, sponsored by Merck, were presented to Laura Emmanuelli Ramos, Rothman Reyes, Samantha Spath, and Kaelyn Stevick, all of the Class of 2016. Phi Zeta Research Day Awards, sponsored by Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, were presented to ten outstanding participants in the Summer Research Program.
The event concluded with the Jaqua Foundation Symposium Keynote Speaker, Dr. Barbara Knust, an MSU alumna who is a leader in the CDC response to the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Veterinary students, master and doctoral students, residents, interns, undergraduates, and faculty present current research across the biomedical sciences. The research experience affords students opportunities to explore research-based veterinary career options and promotes the investigation of new ideas that support the protection of public health and the advancement of science that benefits both humans and animals. Collaboration with other MSU colleges and departments fosters world-class research and strengthens the overall learning environment.
MSU's Phi Zeta Honor Society was the 6th chapter established in the United States in 1950. Membership is offered by invitation based on high academic achievement and sound character to veterinary students, graduate students in the biomedical sciences, faculty, and veterinarians. Phi Zeta promotes the constant advancement of the veterinary profession, for higher educational requirements, and for high scholarship.
