A former ophthalmology resident who is now a researcher at the College has been honored with all resident awards available from the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) after a recent award for a review manuscript.
Billie Beckwith-Cohen (DVM, MBA, PhD, FAAO, DACVO) received the Best Review Manuscript Award at the 2024 ACVO conference in Savannah, Georgia. She was also officially recognized as a diplomate of the ACVO after passing the board examination. Currently, Beckwith-Cohen is a researcher focusing on retinal diseases at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a comparative ophthalmology residency at the College in 2024.
Beckwith-Cohen’s manuscript, “Manifestations of Systemic Disease in the Retina and Fundus of Dogs and Cats,” was published this year in Frontiers of Veterinary Science with the support of her mentor and co-author Simon Petersen-Jones (DVet Med, PhD, DECVO). The manuscript aims to serve a broad range of clinicians during retinal and fundic examinations.
Dr. Beckwith-Cohen was previously awarded the Vision for Animal Foundation Resident Grant for groundbreaking research in retinal degeneration, performed at the Petersen-Jones Lab. The grant is offered annually by the ACVO. Altogether, Beckwith-Cohen has been honored with all awards available by the ACVO for residents.
