National Veterinary Scholars Symposium in Summer

Kennedy Poster

Kennedy Aldrich presented a poster at the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium in summer of 2018. It was held at Texas A&M University. She worked on researching the Effect of Dietary Nonstructural Carbohydrate Content on Glycogen Repletion in Exercising Thoroughbred Horses. Unlike most other animals, horses are slow to replenish glycogen storages, and they cannot speed replenishment of glycogens by carbohydrate loading prior to exercise. This dietary study led to the conclusion that low-starch diets may negatively impact the rate of glycogen repletion in horses, and with 30–40 percent glycogen depletion after exercise, horses need 3 days to recover those stores.

University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum

Schott Poster Right Side Up

At the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF), Melissa Schott presented a poster entitled "Expression of calcium regulatory genes in recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis." Her poster represented years of work investigating an equine disease called Recurrent Exertional Rhabdomyolysis, or RER. It is characterized by stiffness, muscle cramping, and muscle damage, and believed to be related to excessive calcium in muscle cells. She analyzed differential expression of calcium regulatory genes in thoroughbred race horse muscle tissues and discovered a sex-specific genetic expression difference. This difference will be further investigated in the laboratory.

AAAS Young Scholar Award

Deborah Wins2

Congratulations to Deborah Velez-Irizarry for winning the American Society of Animal Science Midwestern Section Animal Science Young Scholar Award 2019. The award was in recognition of outstanding research of a graduate student in Animal Science. Deborah completed a 30-minute presentation at the meeting with the title "Expression quantitative trait loci and allele specific expression exhibiting joint association with polygenetic trait phenotypes in pigs."

MSU Academic Quadrathalon Takes Second

Marisa Award2
Quadrathalon Group

Marisa Henry is part of the MSU Academic Quadrathalon team. On March 11, 2019, the team competed against other teams from around the United States to win second place. Congratulations Team MSU! The quadrathalon was held during the American Dairy Science Association/American Society of Animal Science meetings in Omaha, Nebraska. It consisted of four sections and covered all aspects of animal science.
