Earlier this month, I traveled with several MSU colleagues to Philadelphia for the Special Species Symposium at the University of Pennsylvania. The symposium alternates between the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University each year and features lectures and wet labs related to exotic and special species. It’s a great opportunity to gain valuable clinical skills and learn from specialized supplemental curriculum, and an opportunity to build relationships with future colleagues.

This was the first time at the symposium for many of us attending, and we really enjoyed the lectures, which were sometimes gripping, and the wet labs led by experts in their fields. There were several lectures on conservation, including of exotic felids, marine mammals, and giant salamanders. There also were wet labs for just about all interests, from avian and reptile handling to lab animal anesthesia and behind-the-scenes tours at the local zoo and aquariums!

The trip was a great opportunity to enjoy Philadelphia. We enjoyed an excellent meal at an Ethiopian restaurant, and took in the sights as we walked to and from the symposium every day. We had lots of opportunities to socialize with symposium presenters and attendees. Symposium organizers hosted several social hours the first night and a banquet Saturday.

This was a fantastic trip. I highly recommend that anyone interested in exotic or special species, or wanting to connect with future colleagues at different universities, attend this event.
