The Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation (PDI) at Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking applications for a 3-year and 2-month residency position in veterinary clinical pathology, beginning July 1, 2025. The initial 2 years of training are based at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory’s Clinical Pathology Laboratory in the MSU Veterinary Medical Center (VMC), while the final year and 2 months of training are based at Charles River Laboratories (CRL) in Mattawan, Michigan. Training is provided by thirteen veterinary clinical pathologists, six at MSU and seven at CRL, who are diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). The VDL Clinical Pathology Laboratory has state-of-the-art analyzers and receives over 35,000 accessions per year from the VMC or external clients. Clinical pathology residents gain experience in basic pathogenic mechanisms, hematology, cytology, clinical chemistry, endocrinology, urinalysis, immunologic testing, and surgical pathology. They also engage in the department’s teaching programs. During the 14 months at CRL, the program is focused mostly on toxicologic clinical pathology where residents receive training in laboratory animal pathology, good laboratory practices, and drug safety evaluation. This residency fulfills eligibility requirements for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) board-certification exam and provides a unique training experience for residents interested in a career in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree with an English or English-translated and notarized veterinary diploma from an AVMA-accredited or AVMA-listed international veterinary school (an ACVP requirement). Applications should include a curriculum vitae, official veterinary college transcripts with cumulative grade point average and class standing (if available), a statement of career goals, and three letters of reference. We welcome applications from citizens of other countries. It is strongly preferred that transcripts and letters of reference are sent directly to us from the veterinary school and professional references, respectively.

Please send application materials to Brianna Sosebee, Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, 4125 Beaumont Road, Lansing, MI 48910 (yelsikbr@msu.edu). Applications will be accepted through September 18, 2024 (Wednesday), or until a suitable candidate is identified.

For additional information, contact Dr. Cynthia Lucidi (lucidicy@msu.edu), Residency Program Co-Coordinator (Clinical Pathology) or Dr. Charles Wiedmeyer (Charles.Wiedmeyer@crl.com) at CRL-Mattawan.
