Assistant Professor Jane Manfredi, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVS-LA, DACVSMR (Equine), recently joined the Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation.

Manfredi first came to MSU in 2002 while she was a veterinary student at the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island. She combined her passion for horses with an insatiable scientific curiosity by participating in the College’s Summer Research Program. Manfredi’s experiences from that summer—and subsequent four peer-reviewed publications—helped her obtain a large animal surgical residency at the University of Minnesota and board certification in both large animal surgery and equine sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Her passion for research and for improving the health of her patients led her back to MSU to pursue a PhD in Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology. During her PhD, she focused on understanding how insulin metabolism is disregulated in some horses and how gene expression is altered. “I’m leveraging that experience into new areas of research,” says Manfredi.

She joined the College as an assistant professor, where she will continue her research and teach anatomy.

“I am thrilled I can translate the passion I have had for horses since my youth into a career where I can have a large impact on improving horse health through my research, while helping to inspire the next generation of veterinarians through teaching.”
